Statement
The “434 Hawkeye Dr” series investigates the relationship between domestic harmony and incongruous, impersonal living spaces. Each picture presents my family participating in daily activities, some moments quiet and ordinary and other moments isolating or unsettling.
The diminutive size of paintings demands that one moves in close, and this drawing-in allows the viewer to share in the intimacy and austerity of the domecile - specifically , University of Iowa - University Apartments.
Painted in oil and egg tempera, these pictures explore the particular, microcosm of domestic life and how it aligns with the universial, macro -narrative (i.e. biblical, classical, etc.) Replete with personal symbology and detailed particulars, these home scenes deal with the challenge of trying to live an non-estranged life while in an estranged environment.
